Maureen Watson Turning point and Achievement

Turning point

1- Maureen was brought up in the Dawson Valley, her mother’s Kungulu country.
2-So as a teenager she worked beside her father, becoming skilled at shooting kangaroos, trapping dingoes, mustering, droving and branding cattle, picking cotton, planting seed crops, driving tractors and bulldozers
3-At 21 she married Harold Bayles, a Wakka Wakka man from Eidsvold
4-in 1970 Maureen with their family of five children moved to Brisbane
5- in 1982, facing arrest during demonstrations


Achievement point


1-She joined the fledgling Aboriginal rights movement and commenced an arts degree at the University of Queensland
2-first National Aboriginal Theatre Workshop in Sydney and a Black Film-makers course
3-Her first collection of stories and poems, Black Reflections was published in 1982
4-In 1996 she was awarded the Australia Council Red Ochre award in recognition of her national and international contribution towards recognition of Aboriginal arts.
5- Also she received the inaugural United Nations Association Global Leadership Prize for her outstanding work towards building cross-cultural understanding and harmony

Turning point

1-When his fatBy the late 50s the S.A.state had become increasingly repressive making it more difficult for the ANC to operate. her died, Mandela and was groomed for becoming chief of his local tribe.
2- Whilst at university Nelson Mandela became increasingly aware of the unjust nature of South African Societ
3- Mandela became involved in politics
4- The Transvaal Law Society tried to have it closed down
5- In 1944 Mandela helped found the ANC Youth League
6-Mandela had to resign from the ANC and work underground.
7- there was an extremely lengthy Treason Trial in which Mandela and several others were charged with treason.
8- South Africa was increasingly isolated on the international scene and the government bann
9- However by 1962 Mandela had been arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Robben Island prison.
10- they eventually led to Mandela’s release in 1990.

1990-Mandela released from prison.
